New work - North Yorkshire Open Studios 2024
Having been accepted as a member of North Yorkshire Open Studios in September last year, this has been a great opportunity to show my new body of work for this two weekend open studio event in June 2024 at Pica Studios, York.
In my artistic practice I predominantly work with wool, having become fascinated by the possibilities of the material on my masters degree. I cord, knit, knitweave and felt with it to create new colours and textures. In this body of work, what started as wanting to re-imagine the tartan and checked fabrics of my childhood, it has now become an abstract piece of artwork, from 2D to 3D forms, influenced by the sculptural work of Isamu Noguchi, Constantine Brancusi, Barbara Hepworth and Max Ernst.
The colour palette of mustard browns, rouges, pinks and maroons has come about through the sampling of hundreds of knitted colour swatches that I have made as part of my research for my blanket scarf work. This group of colours has been a constant inspiration over the last few years and is what I have gone back to again and again. You will see a highlight of bright red throughout the work, the red thread of the smocking, the red of the wooden centre piece and the red of the inside of the frames.
